Good hygiene during orthodontic treatment contributes to a smoother process, keeps teeth healthy, and decreases the risk of discoloration and tooth decay. Brush often – twice per day is ideal, but more is even better! Use flossers to remove additional food and debris that gets stuck in between teeth and around brackets and wires. Foods that cannot be cleaned off braces can lead to discoloration and decay of your teeth.
Even though braces and wires are metal, they are fragile and can be damaged by eating the wrong foods, thus taking us more time to finish treatment. Absolutely NO gum; sticky/gooey candies – caramels, taffy, or gummy bears; hard foods – nuts, popcorn, hard candy, or hard pretzels. Remember to see your dentist every 6 months for routine exams and cleanings.
