Botox Therapy for TMJ

TMJ occurs when there is a derangement in the normal function of the temporomandibular or jaw joint.

Repetitive behavior, for many reasons, such as clenching and grinding can contribute to inflammation and spasm of the muscles in the head and neck, causing significant pain. Signs and symptoms include damage to the teeth, chronic headaches, ear aches, shoulder and neck pain, and facial pain.

Botox therapy with trigger point injections is an effective treatment for TMJ headaches and facial pain.

Botox is an FDA-approved, purified protein which is injected into targeted muscles and temporarily blocks nerve signals that cause muscle movements, ultimately relaxing the muscles for up to 3 – 4 months.

This treatment can be effective alone or used in conjunction with other treatments such as bite splint therapy or physical therapy.

If you are having these types of problems, we recommend scheduling a consultation. The doctors will assess all the muscles, both inside and outside of your mouth, that make your jaw function.  They will look at the jaw joint and take a thorough medical and dental history.  Once the problem areas and muscles are located and identified, they can be treated with Botox and trigger point injections.  Patients can expect to feel the results in about 5 days following injections.
